The Simple Truth About Health: Why Basic Habits Are Key

by | Mar 28, 2023

At the heart of healthful instruction lies simplicity.

The common areas that most (intelligent) people are in agreement with.

Nutrition – Control overall intake to maintain a healthy weight, in either direction. Eat enough essential nutrients to maintain certain health parameters. Do this by emphasising a variety of minimally processed foods while limiting highly processed food and drinks, saturated fat, alcohol, drugs and tobacco.

Simple.

Physical Activity – Accumulate some cardiovascular exercise a few times each week. As an extra bonus challenge your body against some form of resistance too. Progress both over time.

Simple.

Now throw into the mix 7-9hrs of sleep and placing some control on chronic stress.

Not quite so simple.

There are decades of science behind those conclusions and they are sound.

There are many complex reasons for the population at large not meeting either requirement consistently, the psychological aspects of healthful behaviours remain the most fascinating.

In a world full of shiny things it’s hard to do the boring stuff.

The technological leap in our lifetime has been huge, it’s driven our ‘efficiency’ in almost every area.

The success of any new product or service revolves around its ability to save time, money, resources or tasks we dislike doing. That or contain an element of desirability and/or entertainment.

Human biology though hasn’t changed in a couple of hundred thousand years.

And It can’t be rushed or slowed – it takes roughly 40 weeks to grow a human, 18 years to grow to adulthood as a female, 43 as a male.

Yet we’re still attracted by products or services that claim they can.

Often times these are sold as the direct opposition of the opening advice, portraying it as ‘outdated’ or ineffective.

If Raspberry Ketones, carnivore diets, cling film wraps, shake weights or anything with the word ‘ab’ truly held the key to effortless weight loss it wouldn’t need to be ‘marketed’.

Back these up with emotive stories and images, clever copywriting, engaging personalities, sprinkle some cherrypicked science and some form of magic solution, we lap them up.

The food pyramid, really not sexy enough.

Of course they get more and more sophisticated too, harder to parse good from bad without a basic understanding of the Kreb cycle.

And of course I don’t have the solution to the problem. I could release a new product ‘Basics but Boring’ but it’s not sexy enough.
